Lucas based the dogfights off of WW2 dogfights, right? Obviously the X-wing is the Mustang/Spitfire/Corsair/Lightning/ME109 type fighter, while the TIE seems more like the Zero in its agility and lack of shields and lighter weapons. Now, would that make the Y-wing more like a Dauntless/Huricane, or more of a Gladiator/Stuka?

The Hurricane was designed to be a fighter, but was too slow and lacked maneuverability when compared to the Messershmidt. It had some serious armor though, and could take a pounding. It could service as a fighter, but was better used as a fighter/bomber in a ground assault role. The Dauntless was stricly designed to be a dive bomber, built tough and slow with lighter guns, but did shoot down some Zeros during the war when used in their scouting roles. This seems more like what I think of when I picture the Y-wing, a slow and tough bugger that can take care of itself for a while in the thick of it. Heck, I even used the Y-wing as often as possible in those old X-wing video games, and remember shooting down a TIE or two.

But, regardless of its role in comparison to the X-wing, my point is that it seems it should at least be as agile as the Senator's shuttle, or the shuttle should be as agile as the Y-wing. I realize the shuttle is only built this way for the scenario, as a way of at least giving the Rebels a chance to win, but it just kinda bugs me to see the shuttle vs Y-wing numbers.
