I feel the same way about football. The first time I played, I figured we could just learn it as we went. It was my game, so I was the QB. We had the rulebook with us.
We thought we could just jump in the game, looking up rules as we needed them. We started a game, but even during the first play people just stood around taking no actions. There wasn't really much to do. One guy threw the ball pretty far, then we just stood there in awkward silence. The burden of intense boredom on the field was too much to bear.
We called it quits and played freeze tag.
