Notwithstanding what it says in the rule book, I believe that that spell (with two slots) is intended to receive upto two dice from one roll. You roll the dice first, then have the option of playing the spell, then you choose which dice to store for future use.
I might be wrong, and if I am, I'd be pleased to be put right. However, the rulebook for this game, especially dealing with the spell rules, is a bit wobbly to say the least.
