+1 - the games are much more different than they appear. Eclipse is one of my favorite games, but it doesn't scratch the wargame itch.
I can't see Eclipse being any fun solo. I've heard that it works well 2 player but I haven't tried that. 4-6 players is great in Eclipse, but it is more about economics and some diplomacy where SE4x is pretty well focused on conquest.
