Waste of time, usually. That's time that should be spent gathering clues to seal gates. Do that only if there are few clues on the board or there is nothing else pressing to do at the moment (or you need other things from the unique item store, like a magical weapon). As you add more expansions, this becomes an even worse idea, because the unique item deck gets diluted.
