My initial post was obviously loaded with sarcasm and your example about Ogre really highlights a process that continues to be rife with arbitrariness.
Either we start lumping stuff into 'families' and 'versions' OR we start splitting significant editions and revisions. Right now we seem to get a mix of these approaches with no obvious adherence to criteria for making these distinctions or at least whatever criteria do get used seem to be used inconsistently from one game to the next.
