I agree, and I think the effect can be greatly simplified by getting rid of the startup exception and just having it dump its encounter cards whenever it's a main player (click the image to see my proposed game text).

Here's what I said about the alien image on facebook:

It's essentially impossible to depict a "typical" Doppelganger, since they all look different. Each one is a visual double — a phantasmal evil twin, if you will — of whomever or whatever it is haunting (indeed, the word comes from the German root doppel, which means "double"). Eon cleverly showed us just the Doppelganger's shadow ... but another approach is made possible by FFG's practice of depicting some aliens interacting with other known aliens, and in particular by their running gag of having poor old Pacifist taking the brunt of other aliens' antisocial tendencies. I'd love to see Pacifist being haunted by his ghostly duplicate, so I mocked up a visual representation of the idea.
