After playing the game myself four times, I then taught it to a new person (and someone fairly new to designer games in general). I found that it worked out well to give a 30-second overview, and then proceed to explain the various components and their functions as I laid them out for gameplay. For example, I laid out the dashboards, and then explained everything related to upgrading your ship. Then the mission/reward cards, encounter cards/spaces, first contact/IOU rules, and finally the cultures with their goods, tech, etc.

Took a while, but I kept stopping to make sure it all made sense. Not sure if there is anything in what I just said that isn't SOP, but it's the best I've got.
