I think you're blowing this out of proportion.
This is no different than a fan of a book getting mad because the movie adaptation changed certain things and left other things out. Taken as a whole and independently of the source material, it's still a solid movie, but because the revered letters-upon-pages wasn't adhered to strictly, it falls flat.
For example, I loathe the Michael Bay Transformers series. I am biased. The changes he made to one of my most beloved childhood cartoons taints my preconceptions to the point that even if they were cinematic mastery, I would still refuse to watch them. (Fortunately, by all accounts they are NOT cinematic mastery)
This is no different, IMO.
