I don´t like the small size of the board.
The board is "ok" but like you I would have preferred if it had been bigger, the compromise being here though that I think Mantic should at least make a larger MDF one available too, as I imagine an acrylic one might be extortionately expensive. Above I suggested 30mm but perhaps a figure closer to 40mm (or 1.5 inches for the Americans) would be perfect.

Did you feel able to defend your own half of the pitch in any way? Are you able to throw up enough roadblocks in your opponent's path to make it difficult for them to score?
Good point that I forgot to touch upon .. yes I too was concerned about this prior to actually playing the game but now it is clear to me that there are ample opportunities to put up defensive "roadblocks".
The most obvious of which is of course by simply having your GUARDS facing the opposition in the way. At the very least these will need to be SLAMMED in order to push them out of the way and that in itself uses up an action is a risk.
With the inclusion of cards and JACKS you have the constant threat of RUNNING INTERFERENCE where during the ball carriers RUSH you (as the defender) have the opportunity to interrupt play and attempt to knock the ball loose (effectively a SLAM). Personally, I love this concept - its the OVERWATCH / REACTION FIRE of Dreadball. ;)
Jake Thornton, Dreadball's Game Designer talked about the removal of "Interceptions" somewhere on his BLOG and whilst I'm not 100% sure on this (so please don't be annoyed if I end up being wrong) I think there either is (or will be again perhaps in Season 2) an INTERCEPTION card and special ability which at a guess would most likely be in the realms of STRIKERS. This of course would allow you to position yourself within reaching distance of any likely "throwing channels" ready to make the interception attempt if presented with the chance to do so.
So, again in my opinion, I feel that Dreadball has a wide enough ranging scope of options to suit both defensive & offensive styles of play and any balanced mix in between.
