This is actually one of the cheapest customizable games in existence. As far as I know, it IS the cheapest customizable miniatures game. Warhammer is extremely close given its $100 entry if you trade a faction to a friend for their half of the base set. You will have to really like one of the two factions in a game system approaching 20 different armies for that to make sense over buying just an updated rulebook, though.Star Wars is currently Rebels vs Empire and you get the signature models in the base set. For about $75, you get 2 X-Wings, 1 Y-Wing, 3 TIEs, and a TIE/ADV. I am not sure where your prices came from. Even at full retail, the base set and one of each expansion ship is $100 on FFG's website.
My current load is 2 core, 1 X-Wing exp, 1 TIE exp, and 2 TIE/ADV exp. I still can't find a Y-Wing exp...must mean that other people think the price is fair.
As an aside, I have yet to have a game I didn't think was fun...even those where my Darth or Wedge was blown to shreds on turn 1 by a chain of swarm tactics. This game is very much worth it for its target audience. If you don't feel like playing 40-50 times, NO game is worth its price tag. I feel like playing Star Wars X-Wing whenever someone asks. Luckily, there are a handful of guys at my local shop who feel the same way.
