About half my games are two player. Because, as others have noted, the auctions are less competitive and the negotiation metagame is significantly diminished, I've found you have far more room to explore and try things out. In my experience, games with more than two players usually rush toward the victory conditions really quickly, since things are tighter and there's this pressure to get factories or space ventures spammed out as soon as possible. As such, there isn't time to do anything really interesting, such as get a rocket to Pluto or try that epic Jupiter fly-by with the magsail and use it to land on Saturn's moon Rhea.
