I engaged Rogue Thirteen on the topic in the thread he linked to.Xelloss, as to your question - I wish I could answer! I don't know how the Rebel fleets succeeded in the tournaments, I just know the results.
I *will* say that my hunch is that in these early months, people are still just getting familiar with the tactics of dogfight maneuvering. As Rebel players get a better grip on the space their maneuvers will put them in, they will cease to be so frustrated by TIES clogging up their path. Slow it down, speed it up, use your shields and your target lock. Don't be afraid to show the TIEs your ass if they look like they're going to wall you off; Imperials don't need a swarm of 8 to win if the Rebel strategy is 'just head straight into melee and mix it up'.
